Mark Wright's research interests revolve around ancient Mesoamerican religion, iconography, and epigraphy. His dissertation, under the advisorship of Dr. Karl Taube, will focus on concepts of divine kingship among the Classic Period Maya, using cross-cultural information from many of the ancient empires similarly ruled by god-kings. He has conducted linguistically oriented fieldwork in the Mormon Colonies of Chihuahua, Mexico and in Jocotán, Guatemala, where he studied Ch'orti' Mayan. He has been named a Nibley Fellow for three consecutive years by the Center for the Study and Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts and has greatly benefited from their generous financial support.
